Procedure
An OB sonogram is an examination technique which uses high frequency sound waves, known as ultrasound, to produce still and live video pictures of the fetus and pelvic region.
The sound waves are produced by a device called a "transducer". The transducer is moved across the surface of the skin while sound waves are sent to the area of the pelvis to be scanned. A special jelly is used to maximize transmission of the sound waves. Much like sonar, the waves bounce off pelvic organs and are converted to pictures.
Because there is no harmful radiation or other side effects, ultrasound is very useful in examining the female pelvis during pregnancy.
Preparation
You may be asked to arrive for your examination with a full bladder.
